The Social Media Smackdown is over and though the start was quite slow the celebrity teams ended up raising over $25000 for charity. The fundraising, hosted by Paypal, Kompolt, and Mashable, challenged 9 celebrity teams to raise funds for their chosen charities within a 2 weeks period using social media such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and StumbleUpon.
The teams that won includes Team Mashable (Pete Cashmore) for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in third place. They raised $4225 by the end of the fundraising period. In second place is Team Alec (Baldwin) which raised $7915 for the Actors Fund. The grand prize winner is Team Corbin. They were able to raise $8985 for Stand Up to Cancer. Paypal gave an additional $5000 to Stand Up to Cancer.
Though the contest is over the fundraising still doesn’t seem to be since my last peek shows team Corbin with $9620 raised. If you want to give to any of the charities you can head to the Social Media Charity Smackdown site or just directly give to your charity of choice. This event showed that social media can be a powerful tool to be used for good but remember that you don’t have to rely on social media if you want to give! So don’t wait for the next smackdown to give but you can be sure we’ll keep you posted if there’s any developments.
